What are Singing Bowls?

Singing bowls are tools of meditation that were believed to have been created and used during Buddha Shakyamuni’s teachings from 560 – 480 B.C. The tradition of the singing bowls spread to Tibet, along with the teachings of Buddha. The physical appearance of authentic singing bowls is minor compared to the sound that is produced. To this day, singing bowls are used in temples and monasteries throughout the world.

Buddha taught that the quality of life depends not upon external development or material progress, but upon the inner development of peace and happiness. Singing bowls were designed to feel vibrations of the universe and receive teachings without verbal communication.

The materials that made up the original singing bowls, remains a mystery today. According to metallurgists at the Concordia University in Quebec, eight metal alloy of copper and tin were found within these ancient structures, along with traces of iron, lead, zinc, gold, silver and mercury. None can be duplicated, making their rarity even more sacred.

Different sounds are said to radiate from singing bowls, depending on your karma. For example, someone with negative karma cannot hear the same sounds and tones produced by tapping these bowls as can someone with good karma. This is a statement made by Lama Lobsang Molam, a monk at the monastery in Swyambu,Kathmandu,Nepal. Only those who are actively seeking a higher learning beyond themselves are capable of hearing and relating to the sounds of the harmonic overtones produced by the bells. It is said that many are able to realize the direct affect upon their chakras through the deep relaxation assistance that these bowls bring.

Superior singing bowls are hand forged and tested for accuracy of pitch, age, rarity and pitch spread. Only 2% of most bowls created are adequate for marketing. Although the singing bowls of today have a different blend of metal alloy, they hold the presence of nature and are capable of adding depth and knowledge to meditation. Selecting a singing bowl is a personal journey in finding the right tone for your being. More times than not, a singing bowl will select you.
